OLD TOWN, Maine — Old Town police said early Thursday morning they may have identified a woman who was killed when she was struck from behind by a Nissan SUV on Poplar Street about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, near the intersection of Kirkland Road, Sgt. Michael Hashey said in a news release Wednesday night.

The woman had been walking north on Poplar Street when she was struck, Hashey said. The driver of the vehicle attempted to render aid and immediately called 911, he said.

Old Town police Sgt. Lee Miller, a crash reconstruction specialist, was called to reconstruct the accident. Members of the Orono Police Department and the Maine State Police assisted Old Town police at the scene.

She is believed to be a 54-year-old Old Town woman, Hashey said in an email, but the department is waiting to notify the family before releasing her name.
