AUGUSTA, Maine — A 49-year-old convicted sex offender was indicted by a Kennebec County grand jury this week in 14 crimes including sexually assaulting a child.

Timothy Hayes of Prentiss Plantation was indicted for gross sexual assault against a person under 12 years old, violation of conditions of release, violation of the state’s sex offender registry law and multiple counts of prohibited contact with minors, according to a news release issued Friday by the Clinton Police Department.

A four-month investigation by the Clinton Police Department and the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office determined that nine children had direct contact with Hayes, according to the news release.

The investigation began when a mother contacted police, concerned about contact Hayes had with her child at a football game, Clinton police reported. The investigation expanded into Fairfield and the Moxie Lake area.

Many of the children were interviewed at the Children’s Advocacy Center in Waterville, which the police stated was the only certified center in Maine. The department said without the “caring staff at the CAC the investigation would have been much more difficult.”

Hayes had moved to Clinton in late August and lived there for about six weeks. All of the crimes occurred during that period, according to police. Hayes was on probation for theft when he was arrested by Clinton police on Oct. 18 on a probation hold for having prohibitive contact with a minor in a safe zone.

Safe zones are areas where children are known to congregate such as athletic fields or playgrounds, Bell said Saturday.

He has been held in jail since that arrest. Hayes also was indicted in Somerset County on six charges. Somerset County had charged him on Jan. 8 for offenses including gross sexual assault against an 8-year-old boy that is alleged to have occurred in August and September.

The Clinton investigation was undertaken by Sgt. Rusty Bell and Detective David Cobb.
