BELMONT Mass. – Dena Brill Slep, formerly of Bangor, died at her home in Belmont, Mass., on Feb. 5, 2014. She was 101.
Dena lived in Bangor for most of her life, and graduated from Bangor High School with the Class of 1930. For 63 years she was the loving wife of Morris Slep. She was a member of Congregation Beth Abraham, and was active in the B’nai Brith and Hadassah. As a young woman she worked for the Medwed Footwear Company, Bangor Beef, and several retail businesses in Bangor. She often told the story of how, while on a banking errand for her employer, she witnessed the October 1937 shoot-out between the Brady Gang and the FBI on Central Street. Dena, an avid reader and opera buff, was very active in the Bangor community.
Dena is survived by her children, Gary and Virginia Slep of Wayland, Mass., Toby Hartman and the late, Paul Hartman, of San Diego, Calif., David Slep of Bangor, and Sharon and Paul Feinberg of Arlington, Mass.; also by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Donations in her memory may be made to Congregation Beth Abraham or to the American Cancer Society.
