Long Creek juvenile inmates facing assault, escape charges

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Three juveniles were charged early Friday with assaulting a staff member at Long Creek Correctional Facility.

The assault occurred shortly after midnight, according to Maine Department of Corrections Superintendent Jeff Merrill.

The three juveniles were in the high-risk unit, Merrill said. The suspects apparently had attempted to escape.

The suspects reportedly managed to get out of the building and into the outside recreation area, but South Portland police and members of the Maine Department of Corrections special operations group managed to get them into custody before they reached a perimeter fence.

All three juveniles are facing charges of escape, assault on an officer and aggravated criminal mischief.
