Dr. Merle Ellery Perkins

HAMPDEN – Dr. Merle Ellery Perkins passed away at a Bangor health care facility, February 11, 2014. He was born October 30, 1928 in Sandy Point, the son of Reuben Ellery “Spec” Perkins and Ellen Ruth (George) Perkins.
After graduating from Stockton Springs High School in 1946, he joined the U.S. Army and was activated for duty in the Phillipines, where he served in the Military Police. In 1965, he graduated from Commander and Staff Military College in Leavenworth, Kansas. He retired with the rank of Major in 1988 from the Army Reserves. Merle received his bachelors and masters degrees in Education from the University of Maine, Orono and later received his PhD in Elementary Education and Administration from the University of Michigan. He began his teaching career in Mt Desert High School in 1953, and one year later he joined the Bangor School system where he worked for 25 years, mainly as the principal of Fairmount School.
He is survived by his wife, Eudora “Dodie” (Howard) Perkins of 60 years, daughter, Mala Morrison and husband, Bruce of Orono, sons Mark and wife, Cindy of Milford and Marty and wife, Becky of Sunapee, NH. He also is survived by his brother, Wayne of Belfast. He took pride in his 6 grandsons, Alex, Doug, Joe, Tom, Derek and Justin and 6 great-grandsons and 1 great-granddaughter.
Merle will be remembered for his love of dancing with his friends at the Blue Goose in Northport. He was an avid hunter, loved sailing and built his own sailboat. He also enjoyed painting, bird carving, tennis, and automobiles.
A celebration of Merle’s life will be held at the Sandy Point American Legion Hall on Sunday, February 16th from 2-4 p.m. Refreshments will be served and we encourage all to come and share stories. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Searsport Congregational Methodist Pantry, co Sally Tripp, 213 Black Hill Road, Frankfort, ME 04438. He will be missed by his family and friends. Arrangements are under the direction of Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Searsport.
