Cole Beal helps No. 16 Jonesport-Beals boys knock off No. 1 Washburn

WASHBURN, Maine — Cole Beal poured in 30 points to help the No. 16 Jonesport-Beals Royals knock off the No. 1 team in East Class D, the Washburn Beavers, 66-63 in a boys basketball prelim Wednesday night.

Cole Beal nailed five 3-pointers while Sterling Beal added 15 points in the win for the Royals (7-12). Last season, the Royals went into the tourney as the No. 1 seed behind All-Maine player Garet Beal and was upset in the quarterfinal round by No. 8 Easton.

Jonesport-Beals advanced to a 3:35 p.m. Monday quarterfinal against No. 8 Van Buren at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. Van Buren advanced when Jake Rioux hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat Stearns in overtime 46-43.

Washburn was led by Cameron Bragg with 19 points with Jarrett Olson adding 14 points. Washburn finishes at 15-4.

On the same night his former high school team recorded the biggest upset of the boys basketball season, Garet Beal enjoyed his best night as a member of the University of Maine Black Bears as he scored a career-high 18 points in a 91-79 loss to Hartford at the Cross Center.
