ORRINGTON – Robert Calvin Willis, 82, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014. Bob was born Jan. 18, 1932, in Talbot County, Ga., one of five children of Robert Anderson and Fannie (Gilbert) Willis.
Bob joined the Air Force and served in the Korean Conflict. He attended the University of Georgia using the GI Bill and graduated with a degree in accounting. He also graduated from John Marshall Law School. He became a CPA and an attorney and retired at age 55 from Regional Counsel, Internal Revenue Service, Atlanta. He was an active member of St. Timothy United Methodist, Stone Mountain, Georgia. In Maine he was a communicant of St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He loved being retired so he could garden and visit his mother and sister on their farm. In retirement he also enjoyed new hobbies and caring for his young grandchildren. He and Dot enjoyed taking the girls on many weekend trips to visit zoos and museums. After Dot retired, he and she moved to be near their daughter and grandchildren, first to Asheville, N.C., then Wichita Falls, Texas, and finally to Bangor and Orrington. He continued to be active with his family and enjoyed visiting new areas in Maine.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy (Hungerford) Willis; daughters, Ruth Willis and Ann DeForest and her husband, David Glenn Coddington; three grandchildren, Emma Marie, Ellen Bennett, and Robert Arthur; one sister, Betty Whisnant of Hamilton, Ga.; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Dotti Johnston, and Nancy Willis; and a brother, James Willis.
A service will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Gifts in his memory may be sent to Hospice of Eastern Maine, 885 Union St., Suite 220, Bangor, ME 04401.
