OLD TOWN — The Old Town Coyotes scored five unanswered points in the final 70 seconds to earn a 48-42 schoolboy basketball victory over the Hermon Hawks in a regular-season finale Friday night.

Junior guard Eric Hoogterp sparked the Old Town surge with three points in the final minute and finished with 19 points. While Hoogterp provided outside scoring punch along with some nice penetration moves to the basket, the Coyotes also received a strong inside game from 6-foot-4 junior center Adam Richardson, who chipped in with 17 points.

Senior guard Tyler Thayer and junior forward Joseph Plummer each scored 15 points to lead the Hawks.

The Coyotes, who entered the game ranked No. 6 in East B, improved to 13-5, while the Hawks, seeded No. 8, finished at 10-8.

Hermon took a three-point lead at halftime, the teams were tied at 35 at the end of the third and the Coyotes outscored the Hawks 13-7 in the fourth quarter.

Hoogterp, who was named the BDN Player of the Game, was pleased with his team’s performance.

“We keep working and really played hard tonight,” Hoogterp told SportNet Maine’s Jim Churchill after the game. “We all contributed tonight.”

He’s looking forward to the postseason.

“We’ll prepare mentally and physically in practice — we’ll keep pushing it,” he said.

The preliminary playoff round is set for Wednesday at the home sites of the higher seeded teams, followed by the quarterfinal round Friday, Feb. 14, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
