Man who claimed dirt bike was stolen accused of insurance fraud

CASCO, Maine — A Cumberland County man is facing charges after he apparently tried to sell a dirt bike he claimed was stolen in 2009, according to sheriff’s deputies.

Daniel McCracken, 41, had claimed that the bike was stolen out of his pickup truck in Naples, according to Lt. Don Foss of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The bike’s value was reported to be $5,000, Foss said.

Recent information obtained by sheriff’s deputies indicated the same bike was advertised for sale on, Foss said.

Deputies subsequently contacted the seller, acquiring about purchasing the bike, Foss said, and identified the bike as the same one McCracken had reported stolen in 2009.

It was also revealed he had filed an insurance claim for the bike and received financial compensation.

McCracken was arrested on Tuesday and charged with theft by insurance deception, Foss said, and brought to the Cumberland County Jail. The owners of the Casco residence where the bike was located were not charged.
