ORONO, Maine — Fitzpatrick Trophy winner Ben Lucas of Cony High School is one of 16 football players who have signed letters of intent to play football at the University of Maine, the school announced in a news release Wednesday.

“This is a group we are excited about getting the opportunity to work with and grow into outstanding Black Bear student-athletes,” Maine head coach Jack Cosgrove said.

Lucas, a record-breaking quarterback for Augusta-based Cony, received the Fitzpatrick Trophy, which represents the state’s top senior player-sportsman, after leading the Rams to a 9-2 record and its first football state championship since 1932 last fall.

He completed 225 of 373 pass attempts for 3,357 yards, 41 touchdowns and just eight interceptions this season, capped off by a 24-of-46, 347-yard performance in Cony’s come-from-behind 30-23 win over Kennebunk in the state final.

The 6-foot-4-inch, 230-pound Lucas concluded his high school football career with 7,575 passing yards and 89 touchdown passes — both considered unofficial state records — while throwing just 28 interceptions in more than 900 passing attempts.

The new class of UMaine recruits also includes Dexter Turner of South Paris, a Cushing Academy defensive tackle who was an All-New England selection by the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council.
