Guerette lifts Husson women’s basketball past MMA

CASTINE, Maine — Chandler Guerrette made two free throws and a jumper in the final four minutes to help the Husson University Eagles edge Maine Maritime Academy 53-49 in a women’s basketball game Tuesday night.

Guerette paced Husson of Bangor (10-9, 9-3 NAC) with 19 points and six rebounds. Victoria McIntyre contributed 13 points and eight rebounds while Samira Cruz netted 12 points for the winners.

Rebekah Campbell (6 rebounds, 3 blocked shots) and Cheyenne Malloy scored 11 points each to lead Maine Maritime Academy (11-8, 8-4 NAC). Leah Jackson pulled down 10 rebounds and provided five assists and two steals.

Fisher 52, Thomas 46

At Waterville, Javana Bernard scored 18 points to pace the Falcons to victory over the Terriers.

Christine Biggs posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds and Porsha Grayson added nine points and seven rebounds for Fisher College (7-12).

Thomas (3-16) was led by Liz Goodall’s double-double consisting of 16 points and 13 rebounds along with four assists. Katie McAllister netted 11 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Men’s Basketball

Bates 71, UM-Farmington 61

At Farmington, Bates outscored the University of Maine-Farmington 50-30 in the second half to erase a 10-point halftime deficit and improve to 11-9.

Graham Safford had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Bobcats and Adam Philpott had 12 points and Luke Matarazzo contributed 11 points, five assists, four steals and four rebounds. Mike Boornazian added eight points and seven rebounds, Billy Selman had eight points and four steals and Marcus Delpeche had seven points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Pat Sumner and Nate Carson had 16 and 15 points, respectively, for 8-11 UMF. Carson also had six rebounds. Andrew Dickey added eight points and eight rebounds and four steals and Uriah Forest-Bulley had eight points.

Husson 97, MMA 50

At Castine, Trevon Butler pumped in a game-high 26 points and he also had five steals and six rebounds to lead Husson past Maine Maritime Academy.

Jason Burgo had nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds and Phil Leighton and Matt Dube had eight points apiece for the winners, who are now 17-2 overall and 11-1 in the NAC. Aaron Willis and Mike Gonzales combined for 13 points and 10 assists.

Tyler Chiasson’s 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists paced 1-18 MMA (0-12 in the NAC). Zach Radcliffe added eight points.

Georgetown 71, DePaul 59

Georgetown 71, DePaul 59: Markel Starks scored 26 points and D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera contributed 15 of his 17 points after intermission as the visiting Hoyas secured their 14th straight victory over the Blue Demons.

Jabril Trawick added 15 points off the bench for Georgetown (13-9, 4-6 Big East), which held DePaul to 32.1 percent shooting in the second half. Starks and Smith-Rivera shot a combined 22-of-25 at the foul line — overcoming a combined 9-of-29 effort from the floor — as the Hoyas went 30-of-41 from the stripe.

Brandon Young finished with 15 points and seven rebounds for DePaul (10-13, 2-8), which matched a season high by committing 30 fouls. Billy Garrett Jr. had 12 points and R.J. Curington chipped in with 10 while Tommy Hamilton IV hauled in 10 boards.

Georgetown opened the game by missing 12 of its first 13 field-goal attempts and shot only 30 percent in the opening 20 minutes, but used a 13-1 advantage in points off turnovers in the first half to battle back from a nine-point deficit. Starks’ 3-pointer near the end of the first half pushed the Hoyas within 30-27 at the break and Aaron Bowen’s trey gave Georgetown its first lead of the game at 35-32 with 14:43 left.

After DePaul knotted it at 37 about a minute and a half later, Trawick and Starks combined for the next seven points while Smith-Rivera scored seven straight over about a two-minute span as Georgetown began to pull away with a 21-7 run that opened up a 58-44 lead with 5:26 left. DePaul got as close as eight on a layup by Young three minutes later, but the Hoyas sank their final six free throws to seal it.
