WINTERPORT, Maine — A local man who called police Sunday night to report that his girlfriend had punched him in the face while he was holding their baby ended up being the one arrested, according to the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.
Derek Caron, 32, of Winterport told 911 dispatchers that he had “retaliated” by taking a swing at her head, but he wasn’t sure if he’d hit her or not, Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton said Monday afternoon. When the officer arrived at the home to interview the couple separately, Caron told him that they had gone to his uncle’s home to watch the Super Bowl, where he’d drunk a few beers, and then they returned home and he went to sleep.
“He said she woke him up and wanted to complain, and struck him in the face,” Trafton said.
But when the officer interviewed the woman, she had a different story. She said she had woken Caron up because she wanted to cuddle, but he became angry that she woke him up. She told police he started calling her names and then put both hands around her neck and choked her, then he grabbed her by the hair, pushed her against the wall and punched her in the head. The woman told the officer that she fought back by punching Caron in the nose, Trafton said.
The officer determined that it was more likely that Caron had been the primary aggressor in the incident and charged him with domestic violence assault. He was taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast to be booked and remained in police custody Monday, Trafton said.
