UMass Lowell to host America East Baseball Championship through 2017

Amy Huchthausen

LOWELL, Mass. — The America East Conference has reached a deal with the Lowell Spinners and the University of Massachusetts Lowell to host the league baseball championship through 2017.

The agreement was made after the conference tournament was held last season at LeLacheur Park, the home of the Boston Red Sox’s Class A affiliate. However, bad weather and a scheduling conflict forced the championship game to be moved to Kingston, R.I.

The 2014 championship is scheduled for May 22-24, and May 25, if necessary.

“Committing to LeLacheur Park for the next four years continues to build the brand of America East baseball and enhances the experience for our student-athletes,” America East Commissioner Amy Huchthausen said in a press release.

“LeLacheur Park is a first-class minor league facility that produced a great atmosphere for our teams and fans in 2013. It is in a perfect location for our fans and institutions, offering all the amenities, plus much more, for our championship,” she added.

The top four teams in the America East regular-season will advance to the 2014 America East championship, which is a double-elimination tournament. The winner earns the league’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.

The America East baseball championship will be streamed live for free on americaeast.tv, which is available on laptops and PCs as well as on smartphones and tablets.

The announcement coincides with preseason workouts for conference teams. The University of Maine began practicing on Jan. 24 in anticipation of its season-opening series Feb. 14-16 at the University of Miami.
