VAN BUREN, Maine — Senior forward Jake Rioux scored 57 points to break the boys single-game scoring record for Van Buren High School en route to a 74-51 basketball victory over the Madawaska Owls on Thursday night.
The 5-foot-11 Rioux nailed 11 3-point baskets among his 19 field goals along with eight free throws to finish with 57 points, breaking the school record of 54 set by Alan Madore in 1986.
“He was just on fire and started off shooting real well,” Van Buren coach Steve Lapierre said. “He started knocking down threes early in the game and finished off with penetration field goals and free throws.”
Rioux made five 3-pointers in the first quarter, four in the second and two in the third. He scored 15 points in the first quarter, 17 in the second, six in the third and 19 in the fourth.
Lapierre was about to take Rioux out of the game in the fourth quarter, but Van Buren girls basketball coach Matt Rossignol told him that Rioux may have a chance to break the record.
“Matt mentioned to me that he was about to break the record, so we left him in to get a couple more baskets,” Lapierre said.
Lapierre added that Rioux got some good open looks at the basket off screen plays and also set up his teammates for several baskets.
