PITTSFIELD AND SEMINOLE, FLA. – Russell L. Martin, 95, of Pittsfield and Seminole, FL recently passed away Jan. 17, 2014, after a short illness at Bay Pines VA Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL. Born in Lewiston, Aug 31, 1918, to Clyde E. and Clare G. (Barnes) Martin.
He graduated from MCI and attended Northeastern University before entering the Army Air Corp with Lawrence Stafford and Kenneth Hamilton, also of Pittsfield, on Dec. 7th, 1939. Two years before Pearl Harbor, while in New York City selling War Bonds, he met his wife, Marguerite C. Wikre, of St. Paul, MN, who was there on vacation with some girlfriends. He was discharged in May 1945 with the rank of Second Lieutenant. They lived for 8 years in St. Paul, MN before returning to Maine to take over his father’s business on Moose Pond. He was a lifelong member of the Pittsfield Masonic Lodge and the World War II Memorial. An avid fisherman and hunter he was a member of the One That Didn’t Get Away Club as well as The Big Buck Club. He also had many trophies as Senior Champion from JW Parks Golf Course.
He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Fawcett of Seminole, FL, his sons, Lowell Martin of Cambridge, Greg Martin of Weston, MO, and Robert Martin of Seminole, FL. His grandchildren, Brent and Courtney Martin; Jessica and Lydia Martin; Kristi and Kasey Martin; and Branden and Kerry Martin, as well as 5 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife, Marguerite and his son, Kerry Martin; brother, John E. Martin; as well as all of his childhood friends.
A spring burial is planned in the Pittsfield Village Cemetery next to his wife and parents.
