Douglas Lamar Torrey

WINTER HARBOR – Douglas Lamar Torrey passed away in his home on the morning of January 27, 2014 in the company of loving family members. Born on September 19, 1927 on Sargent St in Winter Harbor, he was the oldest son of Phillip Edward Torrey and Elona May (Bunker) Torrey. he graduated from Winter Harbor High School in 1945 and was drafted into the Army the following November. After serving in the First Infantry Division, he was discharged in March of 1947, and then worked on the construction of Dow Airfield.

Doug led a full life. He was a true lobster fisherman until the age of 82, and was the Harbor Master in Winter Harbor for many years. He was a Master Mason for 50 years. Doug loved gardening, reading, hunting, clamming, digging for old bottles and building anything often benefiting family and friends.

He is missed and survived by his sister Weltha Sargent; brother Dale Torrey; his children Keith Harlow Torrey, Diane Jean Torrey, Duane Gifford Torrey, Robin Wycykowski and her husband Michael, Bobbi Ann Harris and partner Bob Christie, Slugger (Robert) Bragdon and wife Barbara Jean, Punk (James) Bragdon and wife Pamela, Rosamond Johnson and husband John, Lesley Johnson, and Faith Johnson-Carr and husband Peter. He has numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren, as well as special friends Marianne Potter and Liz Nichols.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 27 years, Ruthellen (Sabo), his parents, sisters Deo Page Gordon, Connie Atkinson, and his best friend Gifford Merchant.

A special thanks is given to Slugger and Barbabra Jean for their tireless care of Doug these last few years.

A graveside Service will be held in the spring.
