FREEPORT – Gordon D. Compton, 70, passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at his home in Freeport. He was born Dec. 9, 1943, in Bellingham, Wash., to Ethel and Hosea Compton.
Gordon graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1967 and worked in the retail business industry for many years. He also graduated with a M. Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary where he went on to work and serve as Deputy Director of A Christian Ministry in the National Parks (ACMNP) for over 20 years. He recently served as the pastor at Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church and Stockholm Lutheran Church in Maine. Gordon was known for making people laugh and comforting people when they cried. He enjoyed nature and hiking. He was also an avid fan of all sports and followed the collegiate players throughout their professional careers, and particularly loved Boston and Seattle teams. He loved with his whole heart and he will continue to be loved and missed by all whose lives he touched.
He is survived by his daughter, Grace; her mother, Alice; his sister, Lorna; and brother-in-law, Doug and their children; his stepdaughter, Barbara-Anne and her husband, Calvin; his stepson, Ernie and his fiancée, Audrey; and the many friends he has made.
A service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 330 Maine St., Brunswick, with the Rev. Rebecca Wegner officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ACMNP; or the Lutheran World Relief fund. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.
