BANGOR, Maine — Bangor police and area search and rescue volunteers are mounting a search for an at-risk local man whose family has neither seen nor heard from him since Sunday.

John H. Eaton Jr., 51, is described as a white male, 5 feet 8 inches tall, 185 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. A resident of Husson Avenue, Eaton was last seen by his family on Sunday and was reported missing on Tuesday, Bangor police Sgt. Catherine Rumsey said.

Eaton was last seen wearing a red jacket and khaki pants, Rumsey said Tuesday.

The missing man’s employer reported that Eaton has not shown up for work for two days.

Eaton’s family is very concerned, as they consider this unusual behavior and Eaton has been without his medications for two days, Rumsey said. Authorities also are concerned about his well-being because of the recent frigid temperatures.

Rumsey said that a city police officer reported seeing Eaton about 10:30 a.m. on Monday while on routine patrol on Brewster Street. The officer said that Eaton appeared to be all right at that time and that he left the area of his own free will.

Among the volunteer searchers are members of the Down East Emergency Medical Institute, who have activated Humvee and ground search teams, and Julie Jones and her search dog, Quincy, of VK9 Scent Specific Search and Recovery, DEEMI Operations Director Richard Bowie said late Tuesday afternoon.

Bowie said searchers have gathered at the Broadway Shopping Center and would fan out from there.

Rumsey said the case is under investigation by the Bangor Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division and is assigned to Detective Larry Morrill. Morril can be reached at 947-7384, ext. 5745, for tips or information that are not time-sensitive.

Anyone who has seen Eaton or who has information about his whereabouts should call the Bangor Police Department at 947-7384 and ask to speak to the shift commander, Rumsey said.
