BANGOR, Maine — The Hermon High School cheering squad has achieved considerable success in recent years, winning the last three Class B state championships and five in seven years.
One title that had eluded the Hawks for the last two seasons was Eastern Maine champion, but coach Kristie Reed’s club ended that mini-drought Saturday at the Cross Insurance Center.
Hermon totaled 145.1 points to win the 15-school Eastern B regional competition, besting two-time defending champion Ellsworth, second with 142.8 points.
“The past couple of years we had a couple of bobbles at regionals, so this year we told the girls over and over to keep pushing and working hard all week because it’s anybody’s game,” said Taylor Smith, one of just three seniors on the Hermon squad along with Alivia Brown and Kaitlinn Turner.
“But we really wanted it and I was very, very proud of all the girls and how they performed. It’s just who has the best performance on that day, and everyone did really well today and we hit a solid routine.”
Old Town, Presque Isle, Caribou and John Bapst of Bangor joined Hermon and Ellsworth in qualifying for the state meet scheduled for Feb. 8 at the Augusta Civic Center.
Hermon and Ellsworth performed back-to-back early in the competition, with the Hawks — who had defeated Ellsworth a week earlier at the Penobscot Valley Conference championships — putting forth a clean routine save for a single one-point deduction for a tumbling error.
“You’re never certain, but I thought we did well,” said Reed, whose roster also includes seven freshmen. “We certainly weren’t perfect today but we improved on some things from last week. But honestly you never know until they give that final call.”
Ellsworth followed with a routine devoid of deductions but not quite enough to surpass the Hawks’ effort.
“The girls had a lot of energy,” said Courtney Taylor, who shares coaching duties at Ellsworth with Nikki Chan. “They were ready for today. Nerves got the the best of them on a couple of things, but we know what we need to practice for states.”
Hermon team members are Smith, Brown, Turner, Calli Veillette, Marissa Cox, Olivia Guiggey, Alexis Hake, Tiffany Tanner, Lexey MacManus, Sarah Perley, Hannah Lynch, Morgan Smith, Ashley Turner, Baylie Dalton, Danielle Dannison, Erica Turmel, Emily Perley and Emily Woodilla.
Ellsworth team members were Ashley Ballard, Kristy Eaton, Marina Magee, Emily Bridges-Myrick, Morgan Barkhouse, Miranda Davis, Emma Sweeney, Danielle White, Gabby Battis, Katharine Avery, Sierra Finley, Maddy Harmon, Victoria Page-Jackson and Piper Hardison.
