Laura L. Meagher

NEWPORT – Laura Leona Meagher, 95, passed away peacefully Jan. 24, 2014, at Sanfield Rehab and Living Center in Hartland. She was born May 11, 1918, in Bath, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of Gordon and Alzena (DeMerchant) Holmes.
She grew up in Mars Hill where she went to school and later met Arnold T. Meagher. She and Arnold moved to Branford, Conn., in 1969 and lived there for many years while Arnold ran Hilltop Orchards. They returned to Newport upon Arnold’s retirement in 1983. Laura will be remembered for her big smile and quick wit. She always enjoyed country music that made her toes tap. Her greatest joy was being surrounded by her family at family get togethers.
She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years in 1984. She was also predeceased by three sons, Gary, Dean, and Merlin; a grandson, Jeffrey Meagher; and a granddaughter, Yvonne Porter. Laura is survived by her daughter and husband, Martina and Don Reynolds of Newport; two sons and their wives, Carroll and Janice Meagher of Newport, and Dalton and Marcia Meagher of Corinna; and two daughters-in-law, Joanne Meagher of Palmyra and Cathy Meagher of Corinna. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Don Reynolds of Newport, Jim Reynolds and his wife, Lori, of Pataskala, Ohio, Kim and her husband, Ed Brown, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Laurie and her husband, Bill Bird, of Plymouth, Liza and her husband, Darren Brawn, of Corinna, Jennifer and her husband, Corey Lawler, of Bangor, Gary Meagher Jr. and Scott Meagher of Branford, Conn., and Nichole Meagher of Pittsfield; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and a Celebration of Life will be conducted in the spring at a time and place to be announced later.
