Maine State Prison inmate’s death due to cancer

WARREN, Maine — A 53-year-old prisoner at the Maine State Prison who died Tuesday succumbed to cancer, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Stephen Ray Gravel died in a cell in the prison infirmary, Maine Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Friday.

The prison death was reviewed by state police and the Maine attorney general’s office as required under state policy, he said.

Gravel had lived in Oxford before being sent to prison in 2012 to serve five years on a conviction for gross sexual assault.
