Orono native and Boston Red Sox third base coach Brian Butterfield will be appearing with the 2013 Commissioner’s Trophy presented to the World Series champion Boston Red Sox in Bangor and Orono on Sunday.

Butterfield was a three-sport star at Orono High School and was the starting second baseman for the University of Maine his freshman year, when he played for his father, the late Jack Butterfield.

He played and coached in the New York Yankees organization before moving on to Arizona and Toronto as a coach.

Butterfield, who lives in Standish with wife Jan (Walton), followed former Blue Jays manager John Farrell to Boston last season and helped the Red Sox win the World Series.

Red Sox catcher David Ross called Butterfield the “hardest working coach in baseball” on a recent visit to Bangor.

The trophy will be on display from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday in the Ballroom at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor and also will be available for public viewing from 2 to 4 p.m. at the University of Maine’s Alfond Arena in Orono.

The trophy, along with the 2004 and 2007 World Series trophies, also will be on display at Portland’s Hadlock Field on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A rally will take place on the front plaza at Hadlock Field beginning at 11 a.m.

The Portland Sea Dogs are the Double-A affiliate of the Red Sox.
