FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — A 42-year-old Fort Fairfield woman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on Tuesday after allegedly stabbing her boyfriend multiple times.

April McCausland was taken into custody after police responded at about 4:15 p.m. to a report of a domestic disturbance at an apartment at 11 Border View Street, Fort Fairfield Police Chief William Campbell said Wednesday.

Officers found a 45-year-old male who had been stabbed multiple times in the chest and abdomen, Campbell said. The man, who the BDN is not naming because he is considered a victim, told police that McCausland had inflicted the wounds during a fight. He was taken by Crown Ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle where he was treated for his injuries. He remained hospitalized overnight, but was in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery, Campbell reported Wednesday.

Before police arrived at the apartment on Tuesday, McCausland had fled the residence with her 2-year-old son, according to Campbell. She soon was located at a nearby residence, however, and arrested without incident.

Her son was placed with a family member, the chief said.

Campbell said that McCausland’s bail was set at $5,000, which she had been unable to post by Wednesday afternoon.

Fort Fairfield police Sgt. Shawn Newell is the lead investigator and was assisted by Campbell and Maine State Police Criminal Investigation Division.
