BRUNSWICK, Maine — A Topsham man faces charges including domestic violence assault and resisting arrest after his girlfriend reported that he pushed her out of a car then started driving away as his two children watched from the backseat.

William E. Harmon, 28, was arrested just before noon Sunday at a Maquoit Road home, according to Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department.

Officers responded to a report that someone had been thrown from a vehicle and injured on Bath Road near Bath Iron Works’ Harding Plant.

Officers who went to the home found Harmon talking to a 23-year-old woman from Bath who was crying, Hagan said.

“He said they were arguing and he pulled over on Bath Road and told her to get out of the car,” Hagan said. “She refused, and he said he pushed her out of the car.”

The woman reportedly told police that after Harmon pushed her out of the car, he began to drive away while she still held on to his arm.

Both parties reportedly told police the woman then got back into the car and the two drove to the home.

Harmon’s 7-year-old daughter and the couple’s infant son were in the backseat of the vehicle during the incident, according to police.

Hagan said officers observed a large abrasion on the woman’s knee.

When police attempted to arrest Harmon, he allegedly refused to put his hands behind his back and then pulled away from the handcuffs, leading to “a fight on the ground,” Hagan said.

Officers charged Harmon with domestic violence assault, possession of a usable amount of marijuana, sale and use of drug paraphernalia and refusing to submit to arrest.

He was released from the Brunswick police station on $5,000 unsecured bail and is scheduled to appear in West Bath District Court on Feb. 18.
