UNION, Maine — A 37-year-old Jefferson man was dead at the scene of a Tuesday afternoon car crash.
Knox County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tim Carroll said that it is not clear whether a medical condition was a factor in the death of Chris LaFrance.
LaFrance’s vehicle was traveling east on Route 17 at 2 p.m. when the operator, for an unknown reason, lost control of the 2005 Toyota RAV4. The vehicle veered off the road, clipped the end of a guardrail, traveled approximately another 300 feet before coming to rest amongst small trees and brush in a low-lying area off the road.
The chief deputy said just by chance, a motorist noticed the vehicle down the embankment. The motorist stopped, called 911 and said it appeared that no one was around the vehicle.
Deputy Matt Elwell arrived on scene first and went to the vehicle to find LaFrance, who was unresponsive. When medical personnel arrived they determined that LaFrance was deceased, Carroll said.
The Union Fire and Ambulance departments assisted at the scene along with All Directions Recovery, the chief deputy said.
