Troy Murphy of Bethel boosted his hopes of earning a U.S.Olympic team berth in the men’s ski moguls with a fifth-place finish Sunday at the final qualifying event held in Val Saint-Come, Quebec.

The fifth-place effort matched the 21-year-old Murphy’s best finish of the season.

The 2010 graduate of Gould Academy was the second-fastest American in the event, trailing only third-place Bradley Wilson, who became the second person to clinch an Olympic team berth.

Patrick Deneen, who already had clinched a spot on the U.S. team, did not participate in Sunday’s race.

Greenville native Jeremy Cota was the third-fastest American among the 59 racers in Sunday’s field, placing 11th overall.

Other American finishers were Dylan Walczyk (14th), Sho Kashima (15th), Joseph Discoe (16th) and Bryon Wilson (28th).

The U.S. Olympic Team for the men’s ski moguls is expected to be nominated Tuesday. Up to four skiers may be selected.
