BANGOR and LEVANT – Mary Velma (Drew) Bowley, 80, wife of the late Ellsworth H. Bowley, who died just three days prior, passed away peacefully Jan. 19, 2014, at a Bangor nursing facility. Mary was born Oct. 17, 1933, in Frankfort, the daughter of Chester and Mildred (Nelson) Drew.
Mary grew up in Frankfort and married Ellsworth H. Bowley on Oct. 3, 1950. She worked beside her husband on their dairy farm while raising three children. Later in her life she suffered two separate incidences of breast cancer, once again proving just how strong of a woman she was. She was a member of the South Levant Baptist Church, Minerva Grange, the PTA, Women’s Extension, and was a Girl Scout leader. Mary enjoyed spending time with her family, and was quick to tease and joke. Mary will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.
Mary is survived by her loving daughter, Barbara Fitch; daughter-in-law, Peggy Bowley; four grandchildren, Roger Sinclair and wife, Sharon, Angela Littlefield and husband, Jeff, Ben Bowley, and Ryan Bowley; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence Drew; her sisters-in-law, Eleanor Drew, Doris Ingalls, and Ruth Bowley; her brother-in-law, Robert Bowley, as well as several nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her parents; her sons, Benjamin and William; brothers, Frances and Paul; and sisters, Doris and Ruth.
In conjunction with Mary’s husband’s funeral services, family and friends are invited to visit 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral service will begin at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dick Woehr officiating. Interment will be in the spring at Oak Hill Cemetery, Winterport. Messages of condolence and memories may be shared through www.hampdengilpatrick.com.
