BANGOR and LEVANT – Ellsworth H. Bowley, 88, husband of 63 years to Mary V. (Drew) Bowley, passed away peacefully Jan. 16, 2014, at a Bangor nursing facility. Ellsworth was born April 26, 1925, in South Pomfret, Vt., the tenth of 11 children to Clarence W. and Addie M. (Lufkin) Bowley.
Ellsworth spent his younger years in South Pomfret, Vt., before moving to Winterport when he was 14. The family ran C.W. Bowley & Sons Dairy in Winterport and later in Bangor. Ellsworth entered the U.S. Navy during World War II and served his country in the South Pacific. He then married Mary on Oct. 3, 1950. They moved to Wyoming and worked for a couple of ranches for a few years before returning to Maine. In 1958 they moved to Levant where they ran a very successful dairy farm, and on two occasions won the Farm Family Award. Ellsworth and Mary retired from dairy farming in 1974. He then ran a lawn mowing business and worked for other area dairy farms. In Ellsworth’s later years he took care of Mary until they both entered a nursing home in August of 2012. Ellsworth will be remembered as a kind and gentle man, and a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
Ellsworth is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughter, Barbara Fitch; daughter in law, Peggy Bowley; four grandchildren, Roger Sinclair and wife, Sharon, Angela Littlefield and husband, Jeff, Ben Bowley, and Ryan Bowley; 10 great-grandchildren; his brother, Robert; his sisters-in-law, Eleanor Drew, Doris Ingalls, and Ruth Bowley; a brother-in-law, Clarence Drew; as well as several nieces and nephews. Ellsworth was predeceased by his parents; his sons, Benjamin and William; brothers, Clarence, Edwin, Richard, and Harvey; and sisters, Ruth, Eleanor, Edith, Marion, and Pauline.
Ellsworth’s family thanks Bangor Nursing and Beacon Hospice for their comfort and care during his final days.
Family and friends may visit 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral service will begin at 3 p.m. with the Rev.
