PENNGROVE, Calif. – Barbara Whitman McHugh died peacefully Jan. 5, 2014. She was 105 years old, born in Bangor on Dec. 16, 1908.
She played the organ at the First Baptist Church in Bangor and spent many summers at her sister Ruth Cushing’s cabin on Moulton Pond near Dedham. She was a life-long pianist, graduating from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1932. She was playing in Bar Harbor when she met her husband-to-be, Loughlin F. McHugh. They first lived in Boston and then moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1943. She taught piano in her home and later served as an accompanist for local light opera companies. In 2005, she moved to her daughter’s home in Sonoma County, Calif., where she continued to play and enjoy music until her death.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Elaine McHugh of Penngrove, Calif.; and her son, Loughlin F. McHugh Jr. of Oakland, Calif.
