Lawton J. Carter

LUBEC – Lawton “Chum” Joshua Carter, 93, passed away January 15, 2014 at a Lubec nursing home with his loving family by his side. He was born October 12, 1920 the son of the late Walter and Ina (Watt) Carter.

Following high school he proudly served his county in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a airplane mechanic during WWII in Europe where he received the Bronze Star. He worked for the American Can Company for a total of 36 years in both Lubec and Fairpoint, New York and retired to Lubec in 1979. He was a life member of Stuart-Green Post #65 American Legion in Lubec. He loved being outdoors, hunting and fishing.

“Chum” will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, and will be sadly missed by his son, Stanley Carter and his wife, Nicolette of Lubec, two special granddaughters, Becka Carter, and Amanda Carter, and a great- grandson, Bryson ; many special nieces, and nephews; and special friends, Lauris “Gump” and Shirley Miller, and Dorothea and LaVerne Tierson. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years, Jacqueline (Findlay) Carter. The family wishes to thank those at the Machias Veterans Home, and the Ocean View Nursing Home for their devoted care.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Whiting Food Pantry, 340 US RT 1, Dennysville, ME 04628. Graveside services at the Olson Cemetery, Lubec, will be announced in the spring by McClure Family Funeral Services, Machias and Lubec.
