Irving E Smith

ORLAND – Irving Eugene Smith passed away Jan. 10, 2014, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. He was born May 9, 1924, in Portland, the oldest of nine children born to Lee I. Smith and Elizabeth Palmer.

He is survived by three sons, Harvey Smith and wife, Marlene, of Verona Island, Richard Smith and companion, Polly Gilley, of Orland, and Daniel Smith and wife, Leonila, of Orland; son-in-law, Brent Seekins of Verona Island; grandchildren, Craig Smith and wife, Lorrie, of Bucksport, Carrie Gray and husband, Terry, of Verona Island, Kimberly Smith of Orland, Benjamin Smith of Orland, Rick Smith and wife, Mandy, of Bucksport, Melissa Proper and husband, Chug, of Deer Isle, Christy Haskell of Hancock, Tory, Josh and Jade Smith of Orland, Dawn Nault and husband, Louie, of Deer Isle; great-grandchildren, Bryant and wife, Heather, Megan, Justin, Kayla, Vanesa, Autumn, Abigail, Samantha, Drew, Katye, Ashley and Madelyn; one brother, Horace Smith and wife, Gerri; two sisters, Alice Grace and Doris Grant; five sisters-in-law, Sylvia Smith, Lorraine Smith, Judy Smith, Ann Morris and husband, Charles, and Nancy Chandler; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Margaret; daughter, Marion Seekins; daughter-in-law, Fran; parents, Lee and Elizabeth; one sister, Leah; four brothers, Ralph, Eben, Donald, and Lee; sister-in-law, Katherine White; two brothers-in-law, Richard Grace and Liston Grant; and special cousin, Imogene Leighton.

Irving attended schools in Whitneyville and Machias. He was a Veteran of World War II, having served with the 150th Combat Battalion Engineers 12 Corps third Army five Campaign Stars. Most of his working years were with various Forestry positions with the St. Regis Paper Company, retiring in May 1986 after 31 years. Irving was a Past Master of Rising Sun Lodge A.F.A.M of Orland, a 32nd degree Mason, a Noble of Anah Shrine.

There will be a Celebration of Life 2 p.m. Jan. 25, at the Orland Consolidated School in the gymnasium. Pastor Peter Remick will be officiating. There will be a family burial service in the family lot at Whitneyville. Condolences may be sent to Melissa Proper, 243 Greenlaw District Road, Deer Isle, ME 04627.
