Authorities investigating whether medical issue caused fatal crash in Madison

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

MADISON, Maine — A local man is dead after a possible medical issue caused him to drive off Route 201 into a ditch on Wednesday, police said.

Ryan Poirier, 51, of Embden was pronounced dead at the scene, Madison Police Chief Barry Moores said Thursday.

Moores said Poirier apparently put his turn signal on before going over the snowbank and into a ditch.

An ambulance crew arrived shortly after and pronounced Poirier dead. Moores said a cause of death has not been determined.

“We’re trying to determine whether it’s a medical issue or a motor vehicle fatality,” Moores said.

Moores said police are working with the medical examiner’s office to determine a cause of death.
