VAN BUREN AND NORTH PALM BEACH, FL – Russell Charles Cyr, 82, passed away in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on January 10th, with his family at his side. He was born April 26, 1931, in Van Buren, Maine, third child of Dr. Claude C. and Edna (Violette) Cyr. After graduating from high school, he attended one year at Ricker College in Houlton before he was drafted into the Army. Russ was stationed at Ft. Myer in Washington, DC, where he served in the Honor Guard for Arlington National Cemetery before his transfer to Munich, Germany, for the remainder of his tour. He returned to the states in 1954 where he finished the business program at Ricker College while courting his future wife, Gloria Plourde. They wed in September of 1956, settled in Van Buren, and together raised five children. For the majority of his career, Russ held sales positions at Top Value and Sperry & Hutchinson companies. In 1984, he and Gloria relocated to North Palm Beach, FL, where he worked in building management and at area golf courses until his retirement in 1994. Russ had a love for all things mechanical. He enjoyed buying, refurbishing, and selling cars, boats, motorcycles, and anything with an engine. He also loved boating and collected many trophies from his racing days in the 1960′s. He had many friends, and stood as best man for several of them. In his later years Russ learned to use a computer and utilized it to stay in contact with friends and family, scan hundreds of historic family photographs, and research his own family tree. Russell will be dearly missed by his children: Lori Antz and partner Fred Wappler of Nokomis, FL and Dover Foxcroft, ME, Chuck Cyr and partner Susan St. Pierre of Van Buren, ME, Janet C. Helfrecht and husband Chris of Jupiter, FL, and Myles D. Cyr of Tampa, FL; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; many nieces and nephews, and special cousins Rick Cyr of Van Buren, ME, and Richard Violette of Lititz, PA. He was predeceased by his wife, Gloria, in 2007, his son, Keith, in 2011, and also his brother, Claude Cyr, and sister, Shirley Cyr. At his request, Russell will be cremated in Florida and a memorial service will be held in Van Buren this summer with details to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Russell’s name to the Genealogy Room at the Abel J. Morneault Memorial Library, 153 Main Street, Van Buren, ME 04785.
