Fire destroys garage, damages house

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

EMBDEN, Maine — A garage was leveled and a home severely damaged in a fire on Dunbar Hill Road on Sunday, according to officials.

The blaze appeared to have started in the rear of the garage, according to Anson Fire Chief Jeremy Manzer, but the damage was so significant a cause likely won’t be determined.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday, Manzer said. The garage, which was attached to the two-story Cape house, was more than half on fire, the chief said.

Crews from five towns were able to contain the blaze to the garage, which contained an upstairs apartment, but the garage was completely flattened, the chief said.

The house sustained heavy smoke and water damage but no structural damage, Manzer said. It took firefighters about 3 hours to get the fire under control.

Crews from Anson, Madison, Solon, New Portland and Skowhegan responded. No injuries were reported.
