ALFRED, Maine — A York County Jail inmate found to be in medical distress early Sunday morning died later in the day, officials said.
Jeffrey Noonan, 49, had been arrested on Thursday for failing to appear on a charge of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, Chief Deputy William King of the York County Sheriff’s Office said.
The cause of Noonan’s death was not disclosed.
On Saturday, Noonan had been taken for medical treatment by correctional staff and returned to the jail later that day, King said. He had also been checked regularly at the jail.
He was found to be in some sort of medical distress at 6:30 a.m. Sunday at the jail, and was later pronounced dead at the facility, King said.
Jail medical personnel and Alfred Fire and Rescue units responded, King said. State police are investigating the matter further.
