Althea L. Keene

BUCKSPORT – Althea L. (Kimball) Keene, 83, passed away peacefully at her home in Bucksport Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, surrounded by her loving family and dedicated canine companion Bear at her side.

She was born in East Corinth, daughter of Harold L. Kimball and Agnes E. Chesley.

She married the man of her dreams, Gerald M. Keene, in Penobscot in March of 1951. Althea and Gerald had a wonderful life and marriage of 57 years traveling the world together 25 of those years with their son during Gerald’s Air Force career, returning to East Orland in 1970 where they became the owners of The Campers Store of East Orland.

Althea and “Jerry” enjoyed running The Campers Store for nearly a decade. Many locals would stop in just to have coffee in the morning with Althea. She always said “there are so many nice people in Maine…and there is no place like home.” She enjoyed taking care of others often leaving them with her wish to “take good care of yourself.” After selling The Campers Store they retired to Kissimmee, Fla. After her husband passed away in 2006 she returned to Bucksport to live with her son, Steven, and daughter-in-law, Debbie.

Althea was predeceased by her husband, Gerald; mother, Agnes; father, Harold; brothers, Elwood and Malcolm; and sisters, Donna, Carol Jean, Linda and Joyce.

She is survived by her son, Steven M. Keene, Major, U.S. Air Force, Retired; daughter-in-law, Debbie Keene of Bucksport; grandchildren, Steven Michael Keene of Altamonte Springs, Fla., Jessica Keene Griffin and her husband, Jason, of Panama City, Fla., and Rolanda Day of Kissimmee, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Melinda Morgan Keene, Clancey Orchard, and Lacey Cornish; sister, Beverly Kimball Free of Bradley; and brothers, Kenneth and his wife, Pam, of Old Town, Vinal and Dale, both from Florida.

Visitation will be held 4-5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, followed by a celebration of Althea’s life and service by Pastor Peter Remick at 5 p.m. Althea will be laid to rest with her husband Gerald at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.
