Six finalists named for Gaziano high school football lineman awards

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Ethan Liberty of Skowhegan Area High School is one of six finalists for the 2013 Frank J. Gaziano Memorial Offensive and Defensive Lineman Awards, according to Jeff Kane, president of National Distributors Inc., and Frank Gaziano’s son-in-law.

Liberty is one of three finalists for the Gaziano offensive lineman award, along with Greg Grinnell of Cheverus of Portland and Jedidiah Scott of Sanford.

Finalists for the Gaziano defensive lineman award are Colin Richards of Mt. Blue of Farmington, Jacob Fogel of Portland and Luke Washburn of Oak Hill of Wales.

The winners and runners-up for what is billed as the largest high school scholarship award of its kind in the country will be announced during a ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Augusta Civic Center. Guest speaker for this year’s banquet will be Gabby Price, head football coach at Husson University in Bangor.

The scholarship and awards program for senior Maine high school football linemen was created in 2010 in memory of Frank J. Gaziano, founder of National Distributors Inc., and a former college All-American and professional football player with a lifelong passion for local sports.The awards are presented to student-athletes who epitomize the character, leadership and perseverance of Gaziano, and who are selected by an awards committee based on strong leadership on the field, in the classroom and in the community.

Finalists were selected from among a group of 15 semifinalists that also included offensive linemen Brendan Moore of Bangor; Isaiah Reynolds, Bonny Eagle; Joshua Thibeault, Brunswick; Matt Powell, Leavitt; and Ethan Petty, Windham; and defensive linemen Caelan Houle, Cape Elizabeth; Dylan Rasch, Greely; Russell Wilson, Nokomis; and Michael Pino, Scarborough.

The offensive and defensive first-place winners each receive a scholarship of $5,000, a trophy and a leather jacket. The four runners-up each receive a $1,000 scholarship, trophy and leather jacket. Funding for the $14,000 in scholarships is provided by National Distributors Inc. in South Portland.
