Ruby M. Browning

FORT FAIRFIELD – Ruby M. Browning, 91, passed away Wednesday morning, Jan. 8, 2014, at a Presque Isle health care facility, following an extended illness. She was born April 6, 1922, in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of James F. and Stella A. (Doody) Browning.

She attended Fort Fairfield schools and had been employed by the Fort Fairfield Housing Authority as a housekeeper and was a member of the Presque Isle Wesleyan Church. Ruby enjoyed traveling, playing cards and board games, horseshoes and was a self-taught guitar player. She played guitar at the former Paramount Theater, Fort Fairfield in the 1950s and appeared on “Stacy’s Jamboree” which ran on WAGM television in the 1970s. One of Ruby’s greatest pleasures was spending time at her nephew Sherwood’s camp in Vienna.

She is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Lois Browning of Farmersville, Texas; and one sister-in-law, Laura Browning of Caribou. Although Ruby never had children, she loved her nieces and nephews like her own. They include nieces, Sylvia Little and her husband, Louis, of Fort Fairfield, Dorothy Sutton and her husband, David, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Sandra Moore and her husband, Stanley, of Newport, Heidi Youll and her husband, Allan, of Allen, Texas, Lisa Browning of Greenville, Texas, and Diane Henderson of Norman, Okla.; nephews, Sherwood Browning and his wife, Nancy, of Bristol, Conn., Winston Browning and his wife, Linda, of Presque Isle, Gary Staples of San Jose, Calif., Loomis Scott and his wife, Kitty, of Easton, Larry Scott and his wife, Connie, of Texas, Ricky Browning of Farmersville, Texas, and Melvin Browning of Fort Fairfield. Ruby will also be fondly remembered by many wonderful friends, including her best friend and caregiver, Jean Stephenson of Presque Isle, Hope Anderson of Houlton, April Peavey of Patten, and Kathy Michaud Allenby of Fort Fairfield; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, a great-great-great-nephew; and her cat, Goldie. In addition to her parents, Ruby was predeceased by three brothers, Merle, Clayton, and Vaughn Browning; four sisters, Elizabeth Staples, Rose Scott, Mable Pendexter, and Sarah Brown; niece, Gloria Mowbray; nephew, Kenneth Browning; and her dog, Sookie.

Friends may call noon-1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield, where the funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Bud Fancy and the Rev. Bernard Brown officiating. Spring interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held after the service at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post Number 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield.
