NEW VINEYARD, Maine — A Kingfield woman was killed Monday afternoon in a collision on Route 27 in Franklin County, police say.

Samantha Wright, 38, was headed northbound when her blue minivan was struck by a white Ford van owned by National Distributors of South Portland, Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols said.

The second van, driven by Craig Gage, 23, of Saco, was headed southbound when he apparently lost control on the icy highway, according to Nichols.

Witnesses stated that Gage drifted into the right shoulder of the road and hit an accumulation of ice, causing him to lose control and overcorrect, Nichols said, crossing the centerline and hitting Wright’s vehicle.

Wright was pronounced dead at the scene and Gage was transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening, the sheriff said.

The accident remains under investigation, and Route 27 was closed for 2½ hours while crews cleaned up the scene.
