Harlan D. Dobbins

MACHIASPORT – Harlan D. Dobbins, 80, went home to be with his Lord Jan. 3, 2014. He was born March 13, 1933, in Machiasport, the son of Orris and Nellie (Beal) Dobbins.

He was a graduate of Washington Academy class of 1951. He worked at the Machias textile mill before joining the U.S. Army where he was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He later attended Maine State Teachers College in Machias. He taught at a local elementary school, and was then a math teacher at Washington Academy until his retirement. His love for baseball prompted him to coach for W.A. where he had also played as a student. In 2009 he received the Washington Academy Trustees Distinguished Educator Award for his outstanding contributions to education. He was a loving husband and father ,and a devoted member of the Bucks Harbor Baptist Church for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Ruth Kennedy; a daughter, Donna Pagnano and husband, Kevin, of Durham; a son, Dwight and his wife, Stephanie, of Griffin, Ga.; two stepsons, Eric Kennedy and wife, Pam, of Pittsfield, and Kevin Kennedy and wife, Ellen, of Milbridge; two stepdaughters, Debbie Stanley and husband, David, of Bangor, and Teresa Sprague and husband, Peter, of Brooklin; grandchildren, Hannah, Natalie, and Emily Pagnano of Durham, Bailey Carreker of Grifin, Ga., Jessica Kennedy of Ellsworth, Aaron Kennedy of Georgia, and Derrick Ray of Milbridge. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his first wife of 33 years, Evelyn J. Dobbins.

Memorial donations in his memory may be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship, 431 Campground Road, Livermore Falls, ME 04254 “marked in Memory of Harlan Dobbins.” Graveside services at the Bucks Harbor Cemetery will be announced in the spring. Arrangements by McClure Family Funeral Services, Machias and Lubec.
