Allan F. Gordon

BUCKSPORT – Allan F. Gordon died Jan. 5, 2014, at his home in Bucksport, surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born May 15, 1932, the son of Viola Gordon and Fred Martin.
Al spent his childhood at the Bangor Children’s Home on Ohio Street in Bangor and in foster homes in Corinth and Charleston. He also received support and guidance from his guardian, Lydia Adams Godsoe.
Al graduated from the Lenox School in Lenox, Mass., in 1950, and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall of 1950. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1960 with a B.S. in Forestry. He graduated first in his class in the School of Forestry and was the Robert I. Ashman Award Student in his senior year. He was a member of Xi Sigma Pi and Phi Kappa Phi.
Al served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at the former Winter Harbor Navel Base in Winter Harbor.
Al spent his entire career as a forester with St. Regis Paper Company, later Champion International Corporation, retiring in 1997, after 37 years. He was a licensed Forester, Real Estate Broker and Professional Land Surveyor. He was a founding member and Past President of the Maine Society of Land Surveyors. He also served on the Bucksport Planning Board for 33 years.
Al was active in Boy Scouts, both as a youth and adult. H was an adult leader of an Explorer Post in Canaan, Vt., Cub Master and Pack 26 in Bucksport, and a District Commissioner, Hancock District, Katahdin Council.
In 2001, at the age of 69, Al was united with his birth family. He was thrilled to be accepted by his siblings and extended family, and he loved them all.
Al had a quick wit, a great sense of humor and loved to tell stories. He enjoyed brook fishing for trout and traveling around the United States.
Al is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jeannette Hanson Gordon; his children, Allan F. Gordon Jr. and wife, Karen, David W. Gordon and fiancée, Tonia Elmore, Holly A. Lutz and husband, Philip and Heidi L. Gordon; his grandchildren, Meaghan Hettinger, Allan F. Gordon III, Ian Gordon, Nicole Gordon, Eric Lutz, Andrew Lutz, and Mallory Lutz; great-grandchildren, Lauren Hettinger, Kaedyn Clements, Noah Lutz and Madilynn Gordon; sisters, Gladys Welch and husband, Buster, and Carol Dow; brother, Wayne Martin and wife, Debbie; a special brother-in-law, George Hanson; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Walter Martin; and sisters, Eleanor Ryder and Sally Lounder.
Family and friends will gather 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, for visitation at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at the funeral home with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Interment will be held in the spring at Riverview Cemetery, Bucksport. Memorial contributions in Al’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
