MAPLETON, Maine — Two central Aroostook residents escaped injury after their vehicles crashed on an area of Route 163 in Mapleton a short distance away from each other on Monday.

Chief Deputy Darrell Crandall of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department said late Monday evening that Laura Chase of Mapleton was driving a 2007 Chevy Tahoe when she spun out of control on an icy patch of the road. The vehicle struck a utility pole. Chase was not injured, but her vehicle sustained significant damage, according to Crandall.

A short time later, Jared Peterson of Caribou, who was driving a 2005 Dodge Caravan, slid off an icy stretch of the route just a short distance away.

Crandall said the van sustained only minimal damage.

Peterson was not injured.

The ages of the drivers and whether they were wearing seatbelts was not immediately available.

While the vehicles left the road in the same area, there was no connection between the two incidents other than icy road conditions, Crandall said Monday evening.
