College roundup: Butler guides Husson men to ninth victory

NORTHFIELD, Vt. — Trevon Butler recorded a double-double to help the unbeaten Husson University Eagles record their ninth straight win, 65-45 over the Norwich University Cadets in men’s basketball action Saturday.

Brooks Spaulding added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles of Bangor while Donte Cottonham and Aaron Willis added seven points each.

Norwich (2-7) was paced by senior Tom McDonald with 13 points.

Husson scored the first basket of the game and would not trail from there. The Eagles took a 10-point lead with 10:15 to play in the first half at 20-10 and answered an 8-0 Norwich surge by with a 15-0 scoring run in the final three minutes of the half for a 37-22 lead.

Colby 92, UMM 61

At Waterville on Saturday, Colby’s Patrick Stewart scored a game-high 20 points and Chris Hudnut finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists in a non-conference win over UMaine-Machias.

Stewart was 6-for-9 from the field, 3-for-6 from 3-point range, and 5-for-5 from the foul line for Colby (6-3). Sam Willson added 14 points and Connor O’Neil had 10.

Elias Gutierrez paced UMM (7-5) with 19 points, Floyd Higgins added 13 and Aaron Van Buren put in 11.

UMFK, UMPI men win two games

At Fort Kent in the United Insurance Can-Am Tourney, the UMaine-Fort Kent and UM-Presque Isle teams each won two games. UMFK beat New Brunswick-St. John 75-59 and UMPI routed Dalhousie Agricultural 92-28 on Sunday while UMFK beat Dalhousie 79-60 and UMPI topped St. John 92-75 on Saturday.

On Sunday, Jeremy Bishop paced UMFK with 24 points while Jeremy Bishop contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds. Michael Warner sparked UMPI with 26 points and Thiago Conceicao added 17.

On Saturday, David Martinez scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead UMFK while Conceicao paced six UMPI players in double figures with 28 points.

Women’s Basketball

UMFK captures 2 wins

At Fort Kent in the United Insurance Can-Am Tourney, UMaine-Fort Kent recorded two victories with a 63-56 win over New Brunswick-St. John on Sunday and a 92-41 victory over Dalhousie Agricultural on Saturday.

UMaine-Presque Isle picked up a 59-28 victory over Dalhousie on Sunday, but were beaten 76-68 by St. John on Saturday.

On Sunday, Jen Colpitts paced UMFK with 16 points and Samantha Carapellucci contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds while Jasmine Rowland grabbed 17 rebounds. Amanda Hotham sparked UMPI with 16 points and eight rebounds.

On Saturday, Colpitts and Carapellucci each scored 12 points to lead UMFK while Hotham led UMPI with 21 points and Olivia McNally added 17.

Colby 75, UMF 64

At Waterville on Saturday, after nailing a school record 17 3-point shots against University of Maine at Farmington last year, the Colby settled for 14 made 3-point shots this year in a non-conference win.

The Mules, who improve to 5-7 overall, shot 45.2 percent (14-for-31) from 3-point range and had four players with two or more.

Mia Diplock led the Mules with game-highs of 17 points and six assists. Carylanne Wolfington was 4-for-6 from 3-point range and had 14 points, while Desi Smith added 13 points.

Elizabeth Ferry played just three minutes in the first half because of foul trouble, but led UMF (3-7 overall) with 16 points. She also had six rebounds and three assists. Lindsay Ranquist added 10 points for UMF and Holly Oliver had eight points, five assists, and five rebounds.

RIC 72, Bowdoin 61

At Providence on Saturday, freshman guard Alex Moore scored 22 points to help Rhode Island College (6-4) hand Bowdoin its first loss of the season.

Bowdoin falls to 11-1 despite Shannon Brady’s 25 points and 12 rebounds and Marle Curle’s 17 points and eight caroms.

Although the Polar Bears opened the ballgame on a 9-2 run through the first four minutes of action, the Anchorwomen responded with a 31-18 run of their own, keyed by 17 first-half points from senior forward Cara Paladino.
