MACHIAS, Maine — More than 5,000 customers of Emera Maine were without power briefly Saturday morning, but it was restored after less than three hours.

The affected customers were mainly in the greater Machias area and also included East Machias, Whiting, Cutler and Lubec.

Those customers lost power about 7:45 a.m. — during sub-zero temperatures — but it was fully restored about 9:10 a.m., reported Bob Potts, a spokesman for the utility. It was still about 8 degrees below zero in the Machias area as of about 10 a.m..

The cause of the outage has not yet been determined. Power was restored by rerouting circuits, said Potts.

“We have redundant lines in much of that area,” he explained, “which is great, obviously, for situations exactly like this.”

Engineers and electricians are still trying to determine the cause, he said.
