Sports calendar for Jan. 2, 2014



BANGOR — Zoneradio, 100.3 FM WKIT, AM-620 WZON the Pulse and 103.1 FM WZLO will present their annual Red Sox Hot Stove Night Monday, Jan. 27, at Cross Insurance Center. The event, presented by Varney GMC, is the 11th year that Stephen King’s Bangor radio stations have hosted the event. Red Sox Radio announcers Joe Castiglione and Dave O’Brien will be featured. Comedian Bob Marley will warm up the audience at 6:30 p.m. for the two Red Sox broadcasters. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are free but necessary for entrance. FORT KENT — University of Maine-Fort Kent Athletics will offer a Winter Basketball Clinic. The Bengal Basketball Cubs clinic is open to grades Pre-K through grades 12 and will be held 9:30-10:30 a.m. Jan. 4, Feb. 1, 8, 15 and 22, at UMFK Sports Center. The clinic rates are $15 per session or $85 for all seven sessions. The clinic staff will include UMFK college men’s and women’s coaches and players. BREWER — Learn to play hockey clinic for adults at 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday, Penobscot Ice Arena. Full equipment required. New players or players who haven’t played in a while and want to get back on the ice are welcome. $15 for an hour of practice followed by a game. BREWER — Learn to Skate/Learn to Play Hockey will be held for children ages 3-15 at 12:40-1:40 p.m. Sundays, through Feb. 9, at Penobscot Ice Arena, 90 Acme Road. BANGOR — Bangor Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for Learn to Skate and Free-Style Skate lessons for ages 4 and up. Session II is Sundays, Jan. 5-Feb. 9, at Sawyer Arena. Learn to Skate is 4:10-5:10 p.m. and is a half-hour of instruction and a half-hour of supervised free skate. Basic Level 4-8 and Freestyle Skate Levels 1-6 is 5:20-6:20 p.m. and is a half-hour of lessons with a half-hour of free skate to practice. Students who would like to compete and test at Basic Levels 4-8 and Free-Style Skate 1-6 must be members of the United States Figure Skating Association. Free-Style Skate Level 4-6 and Synchronized Team Skating is 6:20-7:20 p.m. and is synchronized team skating, and practice for the advanced skaters. WATERVILLE — The Alfond Youth Center ice rink, at 126 North St., is open to the public. Support from the Languet family and Waterville Fire Department has made it possible. The rink is open 8 a.m.-9 p.m. with evening lights surrounding the rink, seven days a week, no fees.


NORTHPORT — Dutch Soccer Academy’s indoor soccer program is under way Fridays and Saturdays, at Northport Point Lookout gym, for children ages 3 and up. CAMDEN — Registration is open for the 2014 U.S. National Toboggan Championships to be held Feb. 7-9, 2014, in Camden. A total of 425 teams vie for mahogany trophies and bragging rights for being the fastest on traditional wooden toboggans down the 400-foot-long chute. This event sells out every year and registration closes Jan. 24, 2014. The cost is $30 per person. Experimental teams are $100 and can consist of two, three or four people on the sled. All money raised benefits the Camden Snow Bowl, which will undergo a major renovation in the coming seasons to include new chair lifts and a new lodge. The racing will be held Feb. 7, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Feb. 8, 7 a.m.-4 p.m.; and Feb. 9, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.


FREEPORT — The 2014 Lobsterman Triathlon and Aquabike will be held Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at 8:45 a.m. at Winslow Park. Register before Dec. 26, and receive a 15 percent discount. The fee before Dec. 26 is $93.50. If you sign up for the Lobsterman and the Boston Triathlon, receive a 10 percent discount on both entries.
