ELLSWORTH, Maine — A local man is facing charges after he allegedly threatened his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend with a gun, according to police.

Matthew W. Dewitt, 23, was arrested New Year’s Eve after officers from multiple agencies went to Walmart on Myrick Street, Ellsworth police said. Police had been told a man with a handgun was outside the store. Responding officers found Dewitt in a vehicle parked in the Walmart parking lot.

Dewitt is accused of displaying a handgun during a confrontation in the parking lot over Dewitt’s former girlfriend, according to police. Dewitt was arrested without further incident on charges of criminal threatening and threatening display of a dangerous weapon, Ellsworth police Sgt. Shawn Willey wrote in an incident summary report.

According to jail records, Dewitt has since bailed out of Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth. Additional information was unavailable Thursday afternoon.

An earlier version of this story inaccurately stated that Dewitt was accused of pointing the gun at the victim. According to Ellsworth police Lt. Harold Page, Dewitt kept the gun pointed at the ground during the confrontation.
