CHARLOTTE, Maine — A 21-year-old Charlotte man is in critical condition after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head early Wednesday, Maine State Police reported Thursday.

State police detectives continue to investigate and have not determined yet whether the shooting with a small caliber pistol was intentional or accidental, reported Lt. Chris Coleman.

“That’s one of the questions we’re trying to answer,” the lieutenant said.

He said that Shayne Pope has been hospitalized at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Pope was listed in stable but critical condition, according to state police.

Pope’s stepfather returned home between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. Wednesday and discovered Pope with the head wound, Coleman reported. The stepfather, who was not identified, called 911 immediately.

Pope initially was hospitalized at Calais Regional Hospital and later was transferred by helicopter to Bangor.

State police detectives arrived at the scene about 6 a.m.

Pope, who was found near a couch in the living room, was the apparent owner of the gun, according to Coleman.

Family members have cooperated in the investigation, the lieutenant said.
