STANDISH AND CARMEL – Mary Ellis, 90, died December 16, 2013 after a long and productive life. She was born in Machias, February 12, 1923, the daughter of Frank and Dena (Bell) Kilburn.
After graduating from Machias High School and Washington State Normal School, she taught in Greenville, Bath, and Bangor, before leaving to raise a family. She went back to teaching in the early 1960s at Eddington, where she taught her two middle sons in a combined 4th and 5th grade class. Mary Ellis was a voracious reader, loved dining out, and always enjoyed voicing her political views. She spent time working on several Democratic political campaigns over the years.
She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Philip F. Lucey, and her sons, Philip and Michael. She is survived by her sons, Patrick of Alamogordo, New Mexico, Matthew and wife, Vicki of Portland, her favorite sister, Frances Yorks of Barrington, Rhode Island and a dear daughter-in-law, Catherine Lucey of Hermon. Also surviving are Philip’s children, Michael and Jacob of Austin, Texas; Michael’s children, Ryan of Bucksport and Erin of Bangor; Patrick’s children, Michaella of Alamogordo, New Mexico and Sean, who travels the seas; and a great-granddaughter, Madison.
At Mary’s request there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Bangor Public Library.
