HOULTON, Maine — With winter here and snow in abundance, Houlton Police Chief Butch Asselin is reminding individuals that it is illegal to plow snow into a roadway.
“There have been complaints of snow being plowed into the streets from parking lots and driveways,” Asselin said. “Snow that is plowed from private property onto a public way is illegal and creates a driving hazard for unsuspecting motorists. Please do your part and remove any snow that is plowed, blown or shoveled into the street.”
According to state statute, it is illegal to place any snow or slush in a road that has not occurred naturally. If during the course of shoveling, plowing or snow blowing, snow from a person’s driveway or yard goes into the road or street, it is that person’s responsibility to remove it in a timely manner.
