BREWER – Phyllis E. (King) Scribner, 80, died unexpectedly at home on December 24, 2013. She was born March 21, 1933, in Orrington, the daughter of Kenneth L. King and Florence E. (Price) King.

Phyllis graduated from Brewer High School in 1951. Shortly after graduation, she met Richard L. Scribner and they were married in 1953. They settled on Parkway North in Brewer to raise their family. She loved living in Brewer and lived there for the majority of her life.

As a mom, she was devoted to her family, and participated in every activity while her children were growing up. She was a Cub Scout leader, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, room mother, sewed dancing costumes, and supported all their music and sports activities. In 1977, she started taking clarinet lessons with other parents in the Brewer Music Association, and worked hard to improve her skills, culminating with 10 plus years playing with the Bangor Band, as well as, duties as their music librarian. She also played with the Brewer Hometown Band and made many friends through that group. Over the years, her many interests included sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening, pickling, home projects, genealogy, church activities, the Brewer Historical Society and the Orrington Historical Society. She took great delight to help others with research and pictures regarding any Brewer topic. In recent years, Phyllis was a member of the Brewer MPM club and regularly had breakfast with classmates from Brewer High. In 2013, after 30 years of research, Phyllis self-published a history of the King family, entitled “The Kings of the Mountain”. Her extensive genealogy research traced back two descendants to the Mayflower, and she was a member of the Mayflower Society, Maine chapter.

Family was so important to her. There are many fond memories of clam/lobster feeds and card playing at the camp on Chemo Pond when the Massachusetts relatives came to visit, and trips to New Hampshire to spend time with the grandchildren. She tirelessly cared for her ailing parents, her husband when he became ill, and her two aunts, as they grew older. Her love and support for her family was limitless.

Phyllis is survived by her three children, Diane Stimpson and her husband, Lee, of Brewer and Glenburn, Russell Scribner of Brewer and Lynn Poulin and her husband, Keith, of Timnath, Colorado; her two grandchildren, Captain Craig Poulin, USAF, and his wife, Katie, of Great Falls, Montana, and Neil Poulin of Denver, Colorado; her brother, Alan King and his wife, Sonja, of Brewer; brothers-in-law, Claude Scribner and his wife, Charlene, of Lee and Roland Scribner of Lee; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and her kitty, Ellie. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard L. Scribner, in 2000.

Family and friends may visit 1 – 3 PM Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer, will be in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory would be appreciated at either the Orrington Historical Society, P.O. Box 94, Orrington, ME 04474 or the Curran Homestead Living History Farm and Museum, P.O. Box 107, Orrington, ME 04474.
